Why Ventura Is the Perfect Road Trip Stop on the Way to Los Angeles

If you’re planning a road trip to Los Angeles, you’re likely gearing up for sunny skies, palm-lined streets, and the iconic Hollywood experience. But before you dive into the hustle and bustle of LA, why not hit pause and discover a hidden gem along the way? Ventura, California is the perfect road trip stop on your journey south—we’re a laid-back beach town with plenty of small-town charm, rich surf culture, an incredible family-friendly outdoor playground for hiking and biking, and a fun cocktail and craft brewery scene. And you’ll want to spend more than just a day exploring everything Ventur has to offer!

It’s easy to get to Ventura. Located just around 70 miles (about 1.5 hours) north of Los Angeles, Ventura sits right along Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) and US-101, two of California’s most scenic and well-traveled road trip routes. Whether you’re heading to LA from San Francisco, Santa Barbara, or beyond, staying in Ventura turns your drive into an unforgettable part of your California road trip adventure.

Here’s why you should stay in this small beach town on your next California road trip!

Prime Location Along California’s Iconic Road Trip Routes

Cue the song “Ventura Highway” folks! One of the best reasons to stop in Ventura is its unbeatable location. If you’re driving the famed Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1), Ventura is an easy and scenic stop.

If you’re taking US-101, Ventura is right along the way and offers a convenient escape from freeway fatigue. Stretch your legs with a walk along the pier or enjoy a meal with ocean views at Eric Ericssons or Aloha Steakhouse. Unlike larger, busier cities, Ventura offers free or low-cost parking and easy access to beaches and downtown spots—making it a hassle-free road trip stop.

Beach Vibes Without the Crowds

While Los Angeles is famous for its beaches, they often come with heavy traffic and packed shorelines. In Ventura, you can enjoy wide-open stretches of sand with far fewer people.

Ventura State Beach is a perfect place to dip your toes in the Pacific, watch surfers ride the waves, or have a picnic with ocean views. Pro tip: on the weekends, catch the Jolly Oyster for the coolest fresh oyster beach picnic experience. You can walk or bike along Ventura State Beach all the way to Surfers Point to see locals surf this iconic point break.

Mother’s Beach across the street from the Ventura Harbor Village is known for its calm and gentle waves, making it ideal for little ones to enjoy the water.

These beaches are right off the highway, making it easy to park, play, and continue your journey without a detour.

Shopping in Downtown Ventura

Walkable Downtown with Local Flavor

Our Downtown is closed to car-traffic, making easy to browse and walk safely! Explore Main Street, where you’ll find locally owned boutiques, coffee shops, and tons of vintage stores (we’re kinda known for thrift shopping FYI!).

Grab a bite: If you’re hungry, stop by Lure Fish House for fresh seafood or Happy Place Eatery for killer smash burgers. But there’s tons of restaurants up and down Main Street — it’s hard to choose just one! Craving something sweet? Treat yourself to Rori’s Artisinal Creamery where you’ll find a ton of fun and unique flavors.

Coffee with character: Need a caffeine boost? Stop by Palermo, Palm and Boy, Kaapicat, Caje, Freedom Coffee, or Prospect Coffee Roasters for a locally brewed pick-me-up.

The best part? Downtown Ventura is only about five minutes from the freeway, so you can park and start shopping and exploring in no time.

Outdoor Adventures Steps from the Highway

If you’re craving a bit of nature, Ventura delivers with outdoor activities just minutes from the freeway.

The Ventura Botanical Gardens offers panoramic views of the coastline and makes for a scenic stroll. Plus, leashed dogs are allowed on Wednesdays and Fridays!

While you’ll need more time to explore the Channel Islands National Park itself, the visitor center located at the Ventura Harbor Village is a convenient stop where you can learn about this stunning, lesser-known national park. Just another reason why you should stop in Ventura on your California road trip and plan to stay for a few days: a trip out to the Channel Islands National Park is so special!

Walk along California’s oldest wood pier: the Historic Ventura Pier. Stretch your legs with a walk along the historic pier, snap some photos, or grab a quick snack from Beach House Tacos.
