George Powell, Powell Peralta and the Legacy of Skateboarding in Ventura
There are places where culture happens—and then there are places where it’s built.

In Ventura, skateboarding isn’t just part of the lifestyle. It’s part of our DNA. It’s part of our legacy. From being the home to the largest skatepark in Ventura County (and one of the largest ones in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties), Westpark Skatepark, to hosting incredible skateboarding competitions like the X Games (back-to-back, we should add) and Jackalope Block Party, Ventura’s skateboarding culture is known across the world.
Inside an unassuming local facility, that legacy is still being shaped every day, led by one of the most influential figures in skateboarding: George Powell.
From Experimentation to Innovation

George Powell didn’t start in skateboarding; he started as an engineer. And it all starts with an old story: after his young son asked to get the yellow wheels that all of his friends were skateboarding on, Powell was inspired to experiment with materials, eventually developing polyurethane skateboard wheels that would change the sport entirely.
What followed that ingenious creation was the founding of Powell-Peralta, a brand that helped define skateboarding’s most formative era. Combined with the Bones Brigade, an influential skateboarding team put together by Stacey Peralta in the 80s with skaters like Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, and Rodney Mullen, and Powell’s work, Powell-Peralta helped shape how skateboarding looked, felt, and evolved.
But the story doesn’t stop in the past.
Where Skateboarding Is Still Made

While Southern California is widely known as the birthplace of skate culture—think Venice Beach and backyard ramps—Ventura holds a different, quieter distinction. Some might say a little more grounded, gritty, and down to earth.
This is where skateboarding is still being made.
Inside a working manufacturing space in Ventura, boards are pressed, designs are refined, and ideas are tested with the same hands-on approach that started it all.
At the heart of it all is a dedicated workforce found right here in Ventura.
Still Rolling Forward
Skateboarding has always been more than a sport—it’s a form of expression. From the legendary Ripper graphic to the culture that emerged in the 1980s, it all still resonates today.
In a world that often moves on quickly, Ventura holds onto something different.
A place where ideas are still tested by hand. Where innovation is driven by passion. Where the legacy of skateboarding isn’t just remembered—it’s still rolling forward.
And for those who know where to look, it’s happening right here.
