With the beach and hiking trails in the hills all within walking distance, you can have your own Ventura adventure without car keys.
Here are three fantastic walking paths that combine exercise with exploration, all while showcasing Ventura’s unique allure.
Get ready to explore this Ventura walking guide below!
1. San Buenaventura State Beach: Coastal Bliss
Distance: Approximately 1.5 miles, starting at San Pedro Street to the Ventura Pier
Why It’s Worth the Walk: San Buenaventura State Beach is the epitome of beachside serenity, offering a peaceful and scenic walking experience without the crowds. Whether you choose a quiet morning walk to catch the sunrise or an evening stroll as the sun dips below the horizon, this path is perfect for soaking up some rays year-round.
Feel the waves lapping at your feet as you look out towards the horizon — on a clear day, the Channel Islands National Park looks almost 3D from the shore. You’ll pass through dunes dotted with native vegetation and walk by multiple jetties as they jut out into the water. On calm days, you might even spot dolphins or seals playing in the surf.
The adjacent paved bike path provides an easy alternative for those looking for a smoother surface. Take a break at the park’s picnic areas or stop by the Ventura Pier at the northern end of the beach to extend your walk. Pro tip: Pack a blanket and some snacks to enjoy a mini picnic with ocean views.
2. Ventura Harbor Village: A Vibrant Waterfront Escape
Distance: About 1.5 miles, with opportunities to linger and explore, starting at Ventura West Marina to Harbor Cove Beach.
Why It’s Worth the Walk: Experience some waterfront fun at The Ventura Harbor Village. This walk is less about logging miles and more about savoring the lively atmosphere of Ventura’s harborfront with gorgeous views of the boats and fun boutiques and eateries that line the harbor promenade.
Begin your stroll at Ventura West Marina, where you’ll walk by boats bobbing in the harbor and two waterfront hotels at the harbor, the Holiday Inn and Suites and Four Points by Sheraton Ventura Harbor Resort (these hotels are great options if you’re planning an early trip out to the Channel Islands National Park which departs from the Ventura Harbor).
Keep walking along the path past the fishing boats and head over to the Ventura Harbor Village. Want to get a fresh plate of seafood? Andria’s Seafood Restaurant (order their iconic fish n chips) and Brophy Bros (try their clam chowder) are popular choices for fresh seafood to sample.
Along the path, you’ll encounter whimsical shops offering everything from local art to handcrafted jewelry. Stop by Treasure Cove for a quirky souvenir, Barefoot Boutique for beachy fashion finds, or Ventura Pottery Gallery for a handmade gift. And if you’re walking with kids, you have to check out the harbor’s newest barcade the Loose Cannon for fun arcade games and plenty of comfort food and beer on the menu — all of it with a water view!
When hunger strikes, the Ventura Harbor Village boasts a range of restaurants. Indulge in artisanal ice cream at Coastal Cone, famous for its Instagram-worthy fish-shaped waffle cones, grab dinner at the Greek for a delicious Mediterranean meal, or sip on a glass of wine at Deep Sea Wine Tasting Room. Live music often fills the air, adding a festive vibe to your walk.
As you walk along the path, you’ll see Island Packers where ferry boats depart for trips out to the Channel Islands National Park. Across the way is Harbor Cove Beach, also known as Mothers Beach. For a bonus detour, venture to the nearby Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center to learn about the islands’ wildlife and history, or climb the lookout tower for panoramic views.
3. Ventura Pier to Ventura Botanical Gardens: Coastline Meets Hillside Views
Distance: Approximately 1 mile, with opportunities to stop and shop along Main Street
Why It’s Worth the Walk: This path takes you from the sea to the mountains, combining Ventura’s iconic pier with the natural beauty of the Ventura Botanical Gardens.
Start your journey at the historic Ventura Pier, one of the longest wooden piers in California. Watch as the waves lap the shore underfoot and look out to the horizon for views that stretch to the Channel Islands on a clear day or look to the iconic Surfers Point as surfers catch the ride of their life. If your stomach is grumbling, check out two eateries right at the base of the pier: Eric Ericcson’s and Beach House Tacos. And don’t forget to grab an award-winning bear from MadeWest Brewing. Just steps from the pier is Aloha Steakhouse for oceanfront views and a delicious plate of surf n turf. And across the way is Ventura’s only beachfront property, the Crowne Plaza.
From here, you’ll head inland via California Street, also known as C-Street to locals, towards Downtown Ventura, lined with restaurants, bars, and local boutiques. From casual spots like Finney’s Crafthouse or Rice by Mamma to sit down restaurants like Lure and Cafe Fiore, you’ll be able to find a restaurant that meets your cravings. Main Street is also lined with thrift and vintage stores that you can’t miss!
As you approach the Ventura Botanical Gardens, prepare for a gentle uphill climb (take a water break when you need it!). The gardens are worth every step, offering stunning views of the city, coastline, and mountains. The pathways wind through diverse flowers and botanicals, showcasing plants from the five Mediterranean climates around the world.
This walk is an excellent option for those seeking a little cardio with their sightseeing, and the botanical gardens provide a peaceful retreat at the journey’s end.
