Five Fun Things to do in Ventura this Weekend

Why just five fun things in Ventura, a town that swims in fun? It’s called a teaser. And really, it’s more fun to keep coming back for more. And we’ll offer you more.

Later.

On a serious note, when you opt to do any — or all — of these things, you are, in one way or another, kindly Supporting Ventura Local, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

So here’s a taste of Ventura fun for this weekend.

Drive here and stay, so you can get it all in; from cool, wide-open beaches, to cold craft beer, to a walkable small-town downtown with unique shops and restaurants, most of them locally owned.

For life is short, and there can never be enough fun.

Feel the thrill at the Ventura Raceway

On plenty of summer Fridays (check their schedule for exact dates), the Ventura Raceway offers fast and furious thrills. From Sprint Cars, to Mod Lites, to Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts, and, yep, Demolition Derbies; the lot of them on a banked dirt track beside the sea (at the Ventura County Fairgrounds). If you’ve never seen a race be prepared for thunder in your chest. Might be the roaring engines. Might be your heart. This Friday, August 21st (8 am to 10 pm), it’s all about motorcycles; speedway bikes and flat track.

Market Place at Ventura College

It may be the best little swap meet you never heard of. Reams of new and used things, often at bargain basement prices. Plus food and live music, all in an expansive parking lot at Ventura College (4667 Telegraph Road). Saturday AND Sunday from 8 am to 2 pm.

Happy 30th Birthday to Surfrider Ventura County!

Surfrider Ventura County has been doing good things for, well, 30 years. They’re (deservedly) celebrating the fact this Saturday (August 21st) from 6 pm – 10 pm at Topa Topa Brewery (4880 Colt Street) — and working to raise money for more good deeds. Admission is free (just stop by) but you can help a great cause by joining in the silent auction (lots of cool local stuff) or just plain volunteering to help. But on this day it’s just about drinking great beer and celebrating a worthy cause. Click here for more info.

Live (often local) music is back in a Big Way

Yes, there’s now a summer-long lineup of live music around town. No more extensive listing of local music offerings than the amazing Ventura Rocks. Quite the lineup this weekend — and every summer weekend — at Ventura Harbor Village too. And, looking into Fall (why not, if it’s fun stuff?), Surfer’s Point LIVE brings live music to the Ventura County Fairgrounds yet again. This time it’s Sublime with Rome, the Dirty Heads and Hirie. A full day of electricity, 2 pm to 10 pm, on Saturday, October 9th. Also coming in the Fall, the Majestic Ventura Theater has a lineup that runs from Drakeo The Ruler to Pennywise..

Celebrate Aloha Friday and Uke Saturday

Jill Martini celebrates aloha and Fridays (both worthy causes), playing a special blend of fun mid-century cocktail tiki and Hawaiian traditional music with the Shrunken Heads on the banks of Ventura Harbor at the Harbor Cove Cafe this Friday, August 20th, from 4 pm to 6 pm. On Saturday, Harbor Cove Cafe hosts a Ukulele Jam with Kool Hand Ukes beginning at 10am. Come sit in the sun and enjoy the joy of music. The jam is marked from 10 am to noon, but the jammers have been known to go way past that.
