10 Things to Do in Ventura During Thanksgiving Break

If you’re looking for the perfect mix of coastal beauty, small-town charm, and endless activities for families during Thanksgiving break, you’ve come to the right place. Whether you have family visiting for the holiday or looking to plan a much-needed getaway, Ventura offers plenty of fun for the lazy beach day goer to the adrenaline junkie.

Here are 10 things to do that will make your Thanksgiving break unforgettable.

1. Explore the Ventura Botanical Gardens

Perched above the city, the Ventura Botanical Gardens offer breathtaking views of the coastline and Channel Islands National Park. Lucky for you, visiting the Ventura Botanical Gardens is free on Thanksgiving Day (9 am – 4 pm). Bring your family, friends, and yes, your leashed furry four-legged friends for a peaceful and beautiful walk along the path. Bonus: it’s a great way to walk off that Thanksgiving feast!

2. See Ocean Wildlife on a Cruise

Experience the beauty of Channel Islands National Park on an Anacapa Island Shoreline Cruise, a 3.5-hour cruise, perfect for ocean lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and adventurers alike. Glide through the waters (keep your eyes open for pods of dolphins who make frequent cameos during cruises as they dance along the boat), and enjoy views of Anacapa Islands’s iconic Arch Rock. Book your trip through Island Packers.

3. Take a Beachside Bike Ride

Enjoy the sun on your face and the ocean breeze through your hair as you ride along the beach. Rent bikes from Wheel Fun Rentals by the Ventura Pier and cruise along the Ventura Promenade to San Buenaventura State Beach to the south or up to the Ventura River to the north. Whether you’re riding on an e-bike or taking the whole crew on a surrey bike, feel free to pull over along the ocean view path for plenty of photo ops to capture the memories.

4. Shop Small in Ventura

Celebrate Small Business Saturday and find unique holiday gifts by shopping small along Main Street and exploring Ventura’s eclectic shops. From artisan crafts at Findings Market or the Livery to vintage finds at Poppies Vintage, you’re sure to discover treasures for everyone on your list. Thanksgiving weekend often features special sales, making it the perfect time to shop small and support the community.

“Shopping small isn’t just about finding unique gifts; it’s about building community. Every purchase at a local business helps support jobs, dreams, and the character of our town. When you shop local, you’re investing in the people who make Ventura special.”

5. Go Coffee Hopping in Downtown Ventura

Local Venturans ride hard for their favorite coffee shops and it’s easy to see why — Ventura’s coffee scene is a hidden gem, and Thanksgiving break is the perfect excuse to indulge in some caffeine-fueled exploration. Maybe you’re looking for a classic PSL or on the hunt for the perfect matcha latte. Whatever caffeine kick you’re looking for, cafe hopping is a great way to cleanse the palate from all of that rich Thanksgiving feasting and have a taste of Ventura.

6. Have a Beach Day

Calling all lazy beach lovers! Even in late November, Ventura’s beaches offer a relaxing retreat with the warm sun overhead. Bring a blanket, pack a picnic, and let the kids play in the sand while you soak up the rays. Harbor Cove Beach (known locally as Mothers Beach) offers gentle waves making it a safe spot for wading and San Buena Ventura State Beach has plenty of picnic benches, grassy space, and volleyball nets for a day full of fun with the whole family.

7. Shop at Findings Market Holiday Fair

This local favorite kicks off the holiday season with artisan vendors, handmade goods, and festive cheer. Vendors fill Oak Street along with live music and plenty of family-friendly activities. The Findings Market Holiday Fair is a fantastic event to shop for unique gifts, sample delicious treats, and enjoy the holiday spirit with family and friends while they’re in town.

8. Jump on Pedal Boats at Ventura Harbor

Rent a pedal boat from Ventura Boat Rentals for some adventure out on the water! Your kids will love picking out their own pedal boat (swans, ducks, and dragons, oh my!). And you never know what you’ll see out in the harbor. After your ride, grab a hot chocolate or ice cream from Coastal Cone or get dinner with a harborside view!

9. Take a Historic Walking Tour

If your crew loves history and culture, stretch out your legs and embark on a self-guided walking tour of Ventura’s historic landmarks. Starting at the Museum of Ventura County, you’ll walk through Ventura’s history by visiting the Ortega Adobe, where the Ortega Chili Company was founded, and other landmarks like City Hall.

10. Stroll Along the Ventura Pier

Last but certainly not least, make sure visiting the historic Ventura Pier is on your to-do list during Thanksgiving break. With panoramic ocean views, watching the waves crash along the shore and surfers catch waves at the iconic C-Street point break is a great way to experience Ventura at its best. Families will love the photo opportunities and the chance to grab a fish taco at Beach House Tacos or Eric Ericsson’s. Don’t forget to stay for sunset – the pier offers one of the best spots in town (the views up at MadeWest Brewing Co are some of the best) to watch the sky light up in brilliant hues.
