Ortega Adobe
The Ortega Adobe was built in 1857 and is know as the birthplace of Ortega Famous Green Chilies. The landmark adobe typifies homes that lined Main Street through the 1800s.
The Ortega Adobe is an architectural example of smaller adobe homes that once lined Main St. In 1857 the Ortega family purchased the land and built a 20-by-40-foot adobe home. In the winter of 1866-67, the Ventura River flooded and destroyed the west half of the Ortega home. Shortly after that, two new rooms were added, creating the structure standing today.
Emilio Ortega used the home to start his Ortega Chili Company business, believed to be the first commercial food operation of its kind in California.
