Bon voyage

Ventura Visitors & Convention Bureaus welcomes Pauline Krovinko from France. She will be at the Ventura VCB until April utilizing her background in journalism while learning more about the travel and hospitality industry. We are thrilled to have her and share her stories with you .  I can’t think of a better way to start a job as the new French intern for the Ventura Visitors and Convention Bureau than a trip kayaking at the Channel Islands. I had the chance to experience the Channel Islands National Park on my third day in California, with the VVCB team, the Ventura Downtown Partners and the Ventura Harbor Village. Everyone met in the Harbor at the Island Packers, and 30 minutes later we were heading to Santa Cruz Island with excitement. Santa Cruz Island is the largest of the five islands that make up the park and where the wildlife is the most present, which we had the opportunity to observe. The trip out was not the easiest one but we were lucky to get to see some sea lions on a buoy, and some dolphins! Once we landed on Scorpion Anchorage, it was time to listen to brief instructions given by Matt and JD, our guides for the day, and to put on our equipment. Then, with some apprehensive excitement, we head out on the kayaks in pairs, and started our trip around the island. After some manoeuvres to familiarize ourselves with the kayaks, we paddled on towards a little cave which we went into one by one. That was an intense challenge for all of us! We kept on going for some time, enjoying the beauty of the rocks and listening to the explanations of our guides, before coming back to our departure point and going exploring on the other direction. We could observe big waves coming out of a cave and splashing next to us, which was really impressive! Some of us had one last challenge trying to go through some waves between two enormous rocks. After this enriching and athletic experience of kayaking, it was time to go back on the islands and have lunch enjoying the sun and the beautiful landscape. We took advantage of the time we had left to take a hike and immortalize this moment with some pictures, before going back on the boat. On the way back, some Gray Whales showed up as well as another group of dolphins, to make this a memorable trip. It was a great team experience and the opportunity for me to explore one of the most famous place of the area!

  Je n’aurai pas pu imaginer de meilleure journée pour commencer cette nouvelle experience. En tant que stagiaire du Ventura Visitors and Convention Bureau (l’équivalent d’un office du tourisme), j’ai eu la chance de participer ȧ une journée kayak vers le Channel Islands National Park lors de mon troisième jour en Californie, en compagnie de l’équipe du VVCB, du Ventura Downtown Partners et du Ventura Harbor Village. Nous avions rendez-vous au port avec les Islands Packers, notre compagnie de croisière, puis nous avons embarqué 30 minutes plus tard vers l’ile de Santa Cruz, très enthousiastes. L’ile de Santa Cruz est la plus grande des cinq iles qui composent le parc naturel, et c’est aussi celle ou la faune et la flore sont les plus présentes, ce que nous avons eu l’opportunité d’observer. La mer fut agitée lors du voyage aller, mais nous avons eu la chance d’apercevoir des otaries et quelques dauphins. Une fois que nous étions arrivé au “Scorpion Anchorage”, le point d’accostage, ce fut le moment d’écouter les instructions de Matt et JD, nos guides pour la journée, et d’enfiler tout notre équipement. Ensuite, non sans quelques appréhensions, nous avons pris place dans les kayaks et notre promenade autour de l’ile a commencé. Apres quelques manoeuvres pour nous familiariser avec les kayaks, nous avons ramer vers une petite grotte que nous avons traversée. Ce fut un challenge pour nous! Nous avons continué notre route pendant quelques temps, en en profitant pour observer les rochers et en écoutant les explications des guides, avant de revenir ȧ notre point de départ et d’aller découvrir l’autre coté de l’ile. Nous sommes passés a coté d’impressionantes vagues jaillissant d’une grotte. Certains d’entre nous ont surmonté un dernier défi en essayant de traverser des vagues entre deux rochers. Après cette experience enrichissante et sportive, ce fut l’heure de revenir sur l’ile et de déjeuner en profitant du soleil et du paysage. Nous avons decidé d’utiliser le temps qu’il nous restait pour monter en haut d’une montage et immortaliser ce moment avec quelques photos, avant de repartir sur le bateau. Sur le chemin du retour, nous avons apercu des baleines grises ainsi qu’un autre groupe de dauphins, pour notre plus grand plaisir. C’est ainsi que cette belle journée se termina sur le port de Ventura. Ce fut une bonne expérience avec toute l’equipe, et l’opportunité pour moi de découvrir un des endroits les plus connus de la région.
