FRANNY: A Reading of a New Comedy by Barbara Gural Directed by Jonathan Fox | Ventura live! ’25 at rincon
Be among the first to experience the development of a new play through Rubicon’s Plays-in-Progress (PIP) program. Join us for a reading of the fabulous and funny play Franny – an evening of hearty laughs, heartfelt tears, and a poignant exploration of what it means to be human. Franny is the story of a humanoid robot that has been successfully created by an AI software engineer to be a companion for elderly persons (like his Jewish mom, who is a recent widow and very lonely). Written by Barbara Gural, this reading is directed by Jonathan Fox, former Artistic Director of Ensemble Theatre in Santa Barbara. Following the play, there will be a facilitated talkback onstage with the author, followed by a complimentary reception downstairs hosted by the Santa Barbara Jewish Federation.
“A robot longing to become human is a familiar science fiction trope, but the playwright refreshes it by making Franny a sincere, vulnerable, and kind creature who has big dreams and a big heart.” – The Black List
